What does the teaching of historical thinking look like?

Identifying historical thinking and reasoning in upper secondary classrooms

Lecture by Dr. Súsanna Margrét Gestsdóttir (University of Iceland)

Teachers sometimes struggle to put their ideas about quality teaching into practice. The observation instrument Teach-HTR was developed to help teachers see how they can teach historical thinking and reasoning (HTR), widely considered important aspects of history education. It contains 33 items, grouped into several categories, that describe teaching behaviours associated with approaches that encourage HTR, as well as recommendations for pedagogical strategies to develop students' HTR. The instrument is intended to serve as a tool for those wishing to emphasise HTR in their teaching, and it can be used in teacher training or in teachers’ professional development.
