Two paths, one profession - navigating medical careers after graduation

We're back with another edition of Medical Alumni Talks, where two of our international alumni share their personal journeys through medicine — the decisions, challenges, and milestones that shaped their careers in the UK.

Speaker no. 1: From Surgical Aspirations to Academic General Practice
Dr Tharani Yogeswara. A 2015 graduate and now a GP Academic Fellow at Swansea University, our first speaker will reflect on her transformation from an aspiring hepato-biliary surgeon to a leader in General Practice and medical education.

Key takeaways:

  • How early mentorship from doc. Loveček and Dr. Skalický shaped her career goals.
  • The emotional shift from surgery to General Practice — and embracing the change.
  • Her current work in research and teaching at Swansea University.
  • Advice she wishes she had received during medical school about training in the UK.
  • The unexpected flexibility and opportunities a career in General Practice can offer.
  • Navigating life as a neurodiverse doctor

Speaker no. 2: From Olomouc to UCLH — Breaking Into UK Radiology Training
Meet Dr Yakup Kilic, Class of 2017, currently a Radiology Resident on the prestigious University College London Hospital training programme. With a background in Internal Medicine (MRCP UK) and Medical Education (PGCCE, FHEA), Dr Kilic brings a wealth of insight into navigating competitive UK training pathways.

He will discuss:

  • His journey from graduation to returning to the UK and entering Internal Medicine Training at Imperial College London.
  • The transition into Radiology and landing a spot at UCLH.
  • How Palacký University laid the groundwork for his success.
  • His work in musculoskeletal radiology research (Margaret Spittle Fellowship at UCL).
  • His leadership in medical education through national seminars and organisations like the Royal Society of Medicine and The Society of Radiologists in Training.
  • Whether you're planning to train in the UK, unsure which specialty path to take, or looking for mentorship and inspiration, this talk is for you.
