What competitions and challenges are being prepared by the GA ČR, and what will the new rules be?

The Czech Science Foundation has published an overview of competitions and calls for proposals starting in 2027, ranging from support for breakthrough research and the development of independent scientific careers to international mobility and returns after career breaks. 

 

Within all competitions and calls announced by the GA CR (or the GA CR and foreign agencies), it will now be possible to submit a maximum of three project proposals (as a proposer or co-proposer), with a maximum of one project proposal in each of the following categories:

 

 

They support the best basic research in all fields.

Project proposals with a typical duration of three years can be submitted by all researchers and their teams, regardless of the length of their scientific career.

Announcement date: first half of February

 

 

 

The call is aimed at supporting research projects with the potential for a major breakthrough in a given field.

The competition is intended for experienced researchers who can implement a five-year project with support of up to CZK 50 million. One of the conditions is submitting a project proposal to the European Research Council (ERC).

Announcement date: early March

 

 

 

It provides an opportunity for scientific independence (including the establishment of a research group), which will bring new research topics to Czech science.

The competition is an opportunity for excellent early-career scientists within 8 years of completing their Ph.D. who have significant international experience and publish in prestigious international journals.

It supports the international mobility of researchers who have completed their doctoral studies in the last four years.

The outgoing grant (OUTGOING) will enable researchers to travel to prestigious foreign institutions. The incoming grant (INCOMING) will support the return or start of a career at an institution in the Czech Republic.

Announcement date: first half of February

 

 

 

It will enable excellent female and male scientists to restart their careers after a career break related to caring for a child or dependent person.

The grants are intended for female and male scientists from Czech institutions within 10 years of obtaining their Ph.D. after a career break. The duration of the support will be 2 to 4 years, depending on the level of employment.

Projects carried out by scientists and their teams together with researchers from partner countries are a separate type of grant.

In 2026, it will be possible to submit joint projects to the GA CR with scientists from the following countries:

  • Taiwan – National Science and Technology Council (NSTC)
  • South Korea – National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF)
  • Austria – Austrian Science Fund (FWF)
  • Germany – German Research Foundation (DFG)
  • Poland – National Science Centre (NCN)
  • Slovenia – Slovenian Research Agency (ARIS)
  • Switzerland – Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
  • Luxembourg – Nation Research Fund (FNR)
  • Croatia – Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ)

 

In the event of cooperation with other foreign agencies, additional international calls may be announced in 2026.

 

NOTICE OF CONCURRENT PROJECT PROPOSALS WITH A START DATE IN 2027

1. In all GA ČR competitions and calls, it will now be possible to submit a maximum of three project proposals (as a proposer or co-proposer), with a maximum of one in each category.

 

2. In the event of success in multiple competitions and calls, it will only be possible to implement one project starting in 2027.

 

3. The possibility of concurrent projects and project proposals is not affected by currently ongoing projects, unless expressly stated otherwise in their conditions (POSTDOC INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIP and Return Grants).
