UP Chronicles: When the air turns crisp and thoughts grow deeper

Wednesday 29. October 2025, 14:37 – Text: Li Zisu (Julia)

By the time October arrives, Olomouc has fully embraced autumn. The air feels cooler, mornings are misty, and the once-vivid leaves now rustle softly underfoot, painting the streets with golden and russet hues. With this beauty, however, also comes the season of colds and flu, a gentle reminder for all of us to care for our health. Warm tea, cozy scarves, and sufficient rest have become our constant companions. As winter time approaches and the days grow shorter, it feels as if the city itself slows down, inviting reflection and focus, a perfect rhythm for study and growth.

A Busy Start at the Faculty of Education

This month has marked an exciting and busy chapter for us in the Faculty of Education. As a second-year master’s student, my classmates and I have officially begun discussing our thesis topics with our supervisors. The semester has grown more demanding, yet also more enriching. We are delving into Qualitative Research, Quantitative Research 2, and Comparative Education 4. These courses challenge our analytical thinking and deepen our academic perspective. Though the workload has increased, our professors’ patience and guidance have made even the most complex theories approachable. Each lecture feels like a step forward in our academic journey, bringing us closer to understanding not only educational systems but also the meaning of learning itself.

Adding to the change this semester, our faculty building is currently under renovation. As a result, our classes have temporarily moved to the Hanácká Barracks building. Despite the shift in location, the learning spirit remains the same. If anything, it has brought us closer as a community. Sharing new spaces, adapting to different classrooms, and navigating the slightly longer walks have become small yet memorable parts of our daily routine.

Erasmus Exchange and Global Connections

Another highlight of this month is the upcoming Erasmus Student Exchange Programme. Our faculty is preparing for collaborations with partner universities in the United States, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Spain. These programs aim to promote intercultural learning, allowing students to experience diverse educational systems and perspectives. It’s inspiring to witness how education transcends borders, a living example of how curiosity and understanding connect us all.

A Celebration of Cultures at International Haná

To further celebrate this spirit of diversity, the Welcome Office organized the International Haná event this month, a day that truly brought the world to Olomouc. Students from across the globe, all studying at Palacký University, came together to proudly present their national cultures through music, traditional clothing, dance, games, and homemade dishes. From the rhythmic beats of African drums to the graceful moves of European folk dances, from the sweet aroma of Spanish pastries to the colorful crafts of Asia, every corner of the hall seemed to tell a different story, yet together they formed one shared melody of unity.

The atmosphere at the event was lively and heartwarming. Students enthusiastically visited each booth, learning phrases in new languages, trying traditional foods, and joining in small cultural games. What stood out most, however, was the genuine sense of friendship and support among participants. Everyone, regardless of nationality, was eager to help one another, whether setting up displays, explaining customs, or simply cheering for performances. Laughter and conversation filled the air, breaking down barriers and creating bonds that transcended geography and language.

It was a vivid reminder that while we may come from different corners of the world, we share common hopes, challenges, and dreams. The International Haná event beautifully reflected the essence of what it means to be part of an international community, one built on respect, curiosity, and mutual care.

October, with its crisp air and quiet charm, has reminded me once again of why I love being part of this university community. Even as the days grow shorter and the nights colder, there is warmth in learning, in collaboration, and in the connections we continue to build, both within ourselves and across the world.

The Ambassador Program of the Welcome Office is an initiative that enables international students at Palacký University Olomouc to engage across all faculties, offering peer support in academic matters, university integration, and cultural exchange. Ambassadors assist fellow students in navigating their studies, adapting to university and city life, and fostering a vibrant multicultural environment. They actively participate in cultural days and events, share best practices, collaborate on projects, and share their academic and personal experiences. Ambassadors also organize social events and facilitate effective communication between students, faculties, and the rectorate of Palacký University. If you are interested in seizing the opportunity to become our next ambassador, you can register here.
