Since the last issue of our newsletter, the streets and parks of our university city, as well as the University Botanical Garden, have turned into a palette of autumn colours. WHAT’S GOING ON AT UP

Briefly from the UP Management Meeting

At the management meetings held on August 26 and September 16, the revision and update of university-wide legal regulations were discussed. UP is considering reopening the U-Club in the Envelopa campus, which would primarily serve the activities of student associations. Read the full summary (in Czech) (after logging in to the UP Portal). Students can apply for the UP Rector’s Award

Every year, the Rector of Palacký University grants several awards. Currently, UP students can submit their achievements by November 14 in two Rector’s Award categories (in Czech): The Rector’s Award for the best bachelor’s and master’s theses and sports performances, The Rector’s Award for the best final theses focused on sustainability. Nominations are also still open for the Rector’s Honourable Mention for Ph.D. students for a scholarly article (in Czech).

Studio UP – Tune in to the New University Video Podcast

With the new semester, the university launched a new podcastStudio UP. Alongside university-wide topics, it will also spotlight faculties and departments. The first episode is hosted by Rector Michael Kohajda, who holds interviews with UP students. This time, his guest is Marta Sýkorová, a Ph.D. student at CMTF. You can listen on YouTubeSpotify, or Apple Podcasts. New episodes appear every other Friday, and all are featured on the StudioUP website (in Czech).

Aurora News: Support for Researchers and Student Courses

In the second call of the European university alliance Aurora, focused on supporting international research, four projects involving UP were successful. UP Ph.D. students attended a course in Amsterdam focused on science communication and publishing. International Haná Festival Brings Campus Together

An exceptional celebration of international and local cultures, communities, traditions, and cuisines took place in the heart of Haná on 9 October at Zbrojnice Library Square. Jointly organised by the Welcome Office and Archdiocesan Charity Olomouc, the second annual International Haná Festival took place during Fair UP Week and brought together the university’s international and Czech communities. Werner von Siemens Award

Publishing your research is essential in today’s academic world – and those who don’t publish almost don’t exist. Students, teachers, and researchers in technical, natural science, and medical fields can apply for the Werner von Siemens Award (in Czech). Nominate yourself or someone else by November 30. Nominators of winners receive 10,000 CZK, and the total prize pool is 1,000,000 CZK. Apply or nominate here. (in Czech)

Open Science Week 2025

From November 10 to 12, you can look forward to three days packed with inspiration, shared experiences, and practical demonstrations focused on open science, research data management, open access, citizen science, and the legal aspects of open knowledge. International Connections & Czech Traditions This Fall

Welcome Office once again presents a series of events planned just for you to enjoy! You can expect packed events:

  • On November 12, Board Games Night, an Ambassador-organized event, promises fun with inspiring peers and a friendly board-game competition in a relaxed, cozy atmosphere.
  • On December 4, International Student Alumni Meetup, the first nationwide event in Olomouc for international students and alumni, focusing on career development, employer showcases, tailored workshops, alumni discussions, and many more.
  • On December 10, Czech Christmas, where you can celebrate Czech traditions and customs, decorate gingerbread, sing along to carols, craft a snow globe, and enjoy a magical atmosphere.

FFest vol. 2 Is Coming!

The second edition of the FFest (in Czech), a festival of student creativity, runs from November 7 to 17, 2025. Enjoy the revitalized short film festival Vřed, stand-up performances, slam poetry from top Olomouc performers current and past, prose and poetry readings by students and successful alumni, “girls power” literature, poet Kateřina Pokorná alias Svojost, actor Tomáš Hanák, lectures, discussions, and more. Vote for the film to be screened for free in Metropol on November 17. Shared Bikes Are Here Until the End of November

Even with autumn’s arrival, you don’t need to give up cycling. As with hiking, there’s no bad weather—just bad clothing. You can keep using nextbike shared bicycles both for commuting and weekend outings until the end of November. Thanks to the support of Palacký University and the City of Olomouc, 65 stations are available around the city. (in Czech)

NEW STANDARDS

  • Statute of the UP Library
    This internal UP regulation, effective October 10, 2025, (in Czech) defines the purpose and structure of the Library of Palacký University, including its organizational chart and scope of activities.

     

  • Guidelines for Setting Indirect Costs
    Effective October 15, 2025, (in Czech)  this UP regulation applies to employees involved in project preparation and secretaries. It sets the share of indirect operational costs within institutional and targeted research support.

     

  • Study and Examination Code – Amendment No. 6
    Effective October 16, 2025, (in Czech) it incorporates adjustments agreed upon by most UP faculties and reflects changes resulting from the amendment to the Higher Education Act.

     

  • Scholarship Code – Amendment No. 2
    Effective October 16, 2025, (in Czech) it reflects updates to the Higher Education Act and revises provisions related primarily to accommodation scholarships.

All UP standards, including the ineffective ones, divided by UP units, with the possibility of filtering and searching in them can be found by students and employees of UP after logging in to files.upol.cz.
