Is "socio-histoire" the new French school of history?

5. March 2024, 15:00–16:30

Lecture by Simon Paye (Université de Lorraine, France)

Abstract:
How did social history evolve in France in the last 40 years? What are the main historical perspectives and how do they relate? What is "socio-histoire"? Has it become the new French school of history? Which heritage from "les Annales" has it kept? In this lecture, Simon Paye will provide a few examples of historical works that have been carried out within the "socio-histoire" stream of research. He will then outline their epistemological and methodological specificities. This lecture intends to open question on how historical research can mix sociology and history, as well as quantitative and qualitative methods.
