Airi: Fifteen Years After the Silence

18. March 2026, 17:00–18:30

Screening of the documentary film and a discussion with the director

We invite you to a screening of the documentary film "Airi: Fifteen Years After the Silence," which tells the story of a young woman named Airi whose life was affected by the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. Director Yoh Kawano himself will guide us through the screening. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director.

The film will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles. Communication with the director will be in English. Admission is free and the event is open to everyone.

As a 21-year-old university student in Japan, Airi is preparing to enter the workforce. At first glance, she appears like many other young women in Japan. But her childhood altered the course of her life. When she was six years old, her entire hometown was forced to evacuate following the disaster in Fukushima. Her life was suddenly disrupted, leading to years of separation, displacement, and constant movement. For the first time, Airi speaks with her father about that period, reflecting on how the experience has shaped her and how it informs her future.
