UP Chronicles: My First Winter Experience in Olomouc: A Little Piece of a Fairytale

Monday 19 October 2026, 11:02 – Text: Parin Somaiya

I still remember February 14, 2025, the day I arrived in the Czech Republic. I was excited to begin a new chapter of my life, but little did I know that one of my first experiences here would become such a beautiful memory.

Coming from India, I had never experienced snow before. I had seen it in movies and pictures, but seeing it with my own eyes was something completely different. Honestly, I could hardly believe what I was seeing. Everything felt so magical that, for a moment, it was almost like being inside a fairytale.

Growing up in India, I was used to a very different kind of winter. The idea of wearing heavy coats, feeling the freezing cold, and seeing a winter landscape like this was all new to me. I knew the Czech Republic would be different from home, but I had not imagined that the difference would feel so special.

A Winter I Had Only Seen in Pictures

One of the things I love most about this memory is the feeling of experiencing something for the very first time. There is a certain excitement in seeing something you have only imagined, and that is exactly how I felt.

The cold was definitely a new experience! Coming from India, I had a lot to learn about dressing for the weather and adjusting to the winter. But even with the cold, there was something beautiful about the whole experience.

Olomouc has its own charm, and winter makes it feel even more special. The streets, the buildings, and the atmosphere all seemed different from what I was used to back home. I found myself looking around with the same excitement as someone discovering a place they had only dreamed of visiting.

Sometimes, we see beautiful places on social media and think they must look amazing in real life. But this was one of those rare moments when reality felt even more magical than the pictures.

India Will Always Be Home

As much as I loved discovering this new side of the world, it also made me think about home.

India is full of colour, culture, traditions, and different experiences in every region. Winter back home has its own beauty, and nothing can replace the comfort of familiar surroundings. But experiencing a completely different climate and lifestyle has helped me appreciate just how diverse our world is.

What feels normal to someone who has grown up in Europe can feel extraordinary to someone arriving from India for the first time. And I think that is one of the most beautiful parts of travelling and living abroad: discovering how different our experiences can be while finding things that bring us together.

Moving to another country is not always easy. There are new routines to learn, unfamiliar places to explore, and moments when you miss home. But there are also little moments of happiness that make everything worthwhile.

For me, seeing snow for the first time was one of those moments.

More Than Just a Beautiful Memory

When I think about my journey to the Czech Republic, I realise that studying abroad is about much more than university lectures and earning a degree. It is also about all the little experiences that become part of your story.

From learning to live independently to discovering a new culture, every day brings something different. Some experiences challenge you, while others leave you smiling long after they have passed.

My first winter in Olomouc gave me a memory I will always treasure. It reminded me how exciting it can be to step outside your comfort zone and experience something completely unfamiliar.

I came to the Czech Republic to study at Palacký University Olomouc, but I also came away with something I never expected to experience so magically: a little piece of a fairytale.

Sometimes, the most beautiful memories are the ones that make us stop for a moment and think, I can't believe I am actually here.

The Ambassador Program of the Welcome Office is an initiative that enables international students at Palacký University Olomouc to engage across all faculties, offering peer support in academic matters, university integration, and cultural exchange. Ambassadors assist fellow students in navigating their studies, adapting to university and city life, and fostering a vibrant multicultural environment. They actively participate in cultural days and events, share best practices, collaborate on projects, and share their academic and personal experiences. Ambassadors also organize social events and facilitate effective communication between students, faculties, and the rectorate of Palacký University. If you are interested in seizing the opportunity to become our next ambassador, you can register here.
