Engaging Ethically with the Very Poor

18. October 2021, 11:00 – 12:30

Lecture from the series of the International Teaching Week

Lecturer: Prof. Peter McCormick

Effectively addressing some salient elements of such global problems as the UN's current number one Sustainable Development Goal of eradicating extreme poverty requires not just economic analysis of material deprivation but also philosophical analysis and ethical engagement with trying to clarify further what is finally at stake in extreme immaterial poverties.

A possible working title might be also: "Philosophically Engaging with Immaterial Destitution?" The question mark is important because what it might mean for some philosophers to "engage" with such apparently exclusively empirical issues as "eradicating" extreme poverty (called "destitution" here) is not unproblematic.
