Dear employees,

Summer is just around the corner – the solstice falls this Saturday at 4 hours and 43 minutes in the morning – and will last 93 days and 14 hours. That's plenty of time to learn something, try something we haven't tried before, see somewhere we've never been before, and most importantly, relax. We wish you to enjoy it, whether you will be in Olomouc or on the other side of the world (where, beware, it may not be summer).

We will continue to prepare the UP Newsletter for you every 14 days, in which we will bring you the latest news from the life of the University, remind you of important deadlines and obligations or invite you to interesting events.

WHAT’S GOING ON AT UP

Briefly from the UP management meeting

At the management meeting (3 June), there was a discussion about an across-the-board increase in wage rates for all UP employees in the range of CZK 1,500 to 3,500 from 1 September 2025. The possibility of reconstructing and expanding the busy UP Student Club at Zbrojnice/Armoury to improve its quality and use is being examined. Read the full summary (in Czech) (after logging in to the UP Portal). More detailed information will subsequently be available in the minutes of the management meeting in UPShare, as well as in the minutes of other bodies, in UP standards and documents, and on other information platforms.

Watch the stream from the inauguration of UP Rector Michael Kohajda

The ceremony will take place on Thursday 19 June at 1 pm in the Church of Our Lady of the Snows (kostel Panny Marie Sněžné) in Olomouc. This important university event will be attended by a number of distinguished guests, representatives of the leadership of Czech universities, cities, regions, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Czech Republic. The festive atmosphere will be highlighted by a performance of the university choir Ateneo. At the end, the Archbishop of Olomouc, Mons. Josef Nuzík. Watch the broadcast on the university's YouTube, where a recording will be available afterwards.

All academics must inform UP about other employment

The amendment to the Higher Education Act has introduced a new obligation for academic staff to inform UP of other employment relationships at other defined institutions by 31 August 2025. This obligation does not apply to work carried out on the basis of the so-called agreements on work outside the employment relationship (agreement on work activity and agreement on work performance). Details can be found in the news on the UP Portal.

VOLUNTEERING

Help where it makes a difference

Summer is still ahead of us, but it is good to make plans early and know that interesting and beneficial events await us soon after the holidays. One of them, when we can do something for others and help where it is needed, is definitely the UP Employee Volunteer Day, which will take place on 16 September. Volunteer opportunities will be posted on August 15, and sign-ups will be open until September 5. Read more in the UP Journal article. (in Czech)

SCIENCE AND RESEARCH

Using the DataCite Service and Assigning DOIs

The university offers the option to assign a persistent identifier, DOI (Digital Object Identifier), to research data and other research outputs through its membership in the National DOI Centre, coordinated by the National Library of Technology. A DOI enables transparent and reliable identification of objects in the digital environment, facilitates their exchange, improves citability, and makes related metadata more accessible to the research community.

If you are interested or have a suggestion on how DOIs could be used in your research, please contact the Research Concepts and Support Office at tereza.motalova@upol.cz

The Future of Open Science in the Czech Republic: Join the Survey

Open science is a key tool for the transparent dissemination of scientific knowledge and for strengthening the economic and societal impact of research. However, its implementation is associated with significant demands on financial resources, infrastructure, human capacity, and security. For these reasons, the Research, Development and Innovation Council, in cooperation with the Government Office of the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and other funding bodies, has tasked Technology Centre Prague with preparing an analysis of the national open science landscape. The aim of this analysis is to map the conditions for applying open science principles in the Czech Republic and to propose measures for its future coordinated development. A key input for the analysis is the perspective of researchers across disciplines and career stages. If you are interested, you can take part in the survey via this link until July 10, 2025.

NEW STANDARDS

  • Accreditation and Approval of Study Programmes and Accreditation of Habilitation Procedures and Procedures for Appointment as Professor at UP – Amendment No. 4
This amendment to the UP internal standard, effective from 17 June 2025, (in Czech) is addressed to all UP employees involved in the process of applying for authorisation to pursue a study programme. This amendment includes a formal amendment to the procedure for the continuous evaluation of a study programme.

  • Statute of the Coordinating Council for Lifelong Learning at UP – Amendment No. 1
This amendment to the internal standard of UP, effective from 18 June 2025,
(in Czech) is intended for members of the Coordinating Council for Lifelong Learning, submitters of microcertificate-endorsed LLL programmes without a link to an approved study programme and UP employees who prepare applications for approval of microcertificate-endorsed LLL programmes and who work with them. Modifies the validity period of the approval of a micro-certificate-endorsed CVT programme without a link to an approved study programme by adding the word 'normally' before the words 'five years', because the validity period of five years for the approval of that programme has proved insufficient in the context of projects and changing the validity period of the approval of that programme is a better solution than keeping an eye on the end of the validity period of that programme and dealing with its subsequent extension.

All UP standards, including the ineffective ones, divided by UP units, with the possibility of filtering and searching in them can be found by students and employees of UP after logging in to files.upol.cz.
