Dear students,

we have one more UP Newsletter to go and then it's the holidays. With it comes long days, pleasant evenings and lots of events in the city, which the university cannot miss, so in today's issue we will invite you to some of them. We also have the first information about the summer opening times at UP, we will bring you a complete overview in the next issue. At the same time, there is also an offer of volunteering, an invitation to a discussion over the new book published by UP Press and a popular competition.

WHAT’S GOING ON AT UP

Briefly from the UP management meeting

At the management meeting (20 May), the success of UP in the Jan Amos Komenský Operational Programme (OP JAK), Research Environment Call was discussed. The amount of the doctoral scholarship/scholarship for students entering the first year of the DSP at UP will be unified across the university to CZK 25,000 from September 2025. Summer operation of FreshUP canteens and bistros

Starting June 16, the main cafeteria will close at 2:30 pm. From the beginning of July until the beginning of the winter semester, the canteens, including the FreshUP bistros, will have different opening hours. From 30 June to 4 July, all canteens will be closed, and from the second week of July most canteens and bistros will operate on a regular or reduced schedule. The Neředín canteen will reopen on 22 September. A detailed schedule can be found on the SKM website.

At the end of May, a new Czech issue of the printed magazine Žurnál UP was published, which is now available online in PDF format. COURSES

Science communication course in Amsterdam for PhD students and young scientists

In today's science, it is not enough to "just" publish - you need to be seen, heard and speak the language of science and the public at the same time. Sign up for a course organised by our Aurora network partner Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. You will learn how to prepare a manuscript for publication and go through the peer review process, and how to navigate the ethics of scientific publishing. You will also be able to translate complex scientific topics into clear and engaging messages for different audiences. The course will take place from 6 to 10 October in Amsterdam. Discussion: Unconventional comic Dark Grain brings the dark side of post-war history to life

The massacre at the Švédské šance near Přerov belongs to the darkest chapters of our post-war history. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of this tragic event, the UP Press presents the book Temné obilí (Dark Grain), which presents the course and consequences of the entire massacre through an unconventional combination of comics and scholarly study. A discussion of the book with the authors and historians will take place on Tuesday, 17 June at 17:00 in the Red Church.

Come to the University for the Olomouc City Festival

Olomouc will be celebrating on the first weekend of June and the University must not miss it (in Czech). The traditional City Festival will begin on Friday 6 June with a historical parade in honour of St. Pauline, the patron saint of Olomouc. University dignitaries will be walking in it. On Saturday, the UPoint will be open and visitors will find the University's relaxation and science zone in front of the Town Hall, where they can enjoy puzzles and exhibits from the Fortress of Knowledge, a block-making workshop, a science show with the UP Crowd or a lay resuscitation training with medical students.

In June, UPoint will be open for you on two extra Saturdays, on 7 June and 21 June, from 12:00 to 17:00.
