Dear students,

Today's newsletter will start with a short and dynamic look back – a two-minute aftermovie from this year's May Fest (Majáles), which we will also commemorate with a competition. On the other hand, if we look ahead and turn our eyes to the Fort Science, we can see the upcoming Health Fair or the Science Fair. Other important news from the life of the university are waiting for you in more detail below.

Summer opening hours of the UP Library

Not only the canteens and bistros (in Czech), but also the Central Library in the Armoury (Zbrojnice) and other faculty branches of the UP Library will have modified opening hours during the summer. When they are closed, books can be returned to the biblioboxes. Long-term loans (absentee loans for 30 days) are automatically checked out until September 19, the beginning of the semester. Detailed information about the opening hours of each branch can be found on the library's website.

Olomouc Half Marathon will bring traffic restrictions on Saturday

On Saturday, 18 June, the Olomouc streets will host a half marathon and in the afternoon (from approximately 16:00, but in some places from 8:00) traffic will be significantly restricted in the city. Details of the race and traffic restrictions can be found here (in Czech). The restrictions will also affect 17 November Street. Since the Summer Youth Olympics this year requires you to leave the dorms by Sunday, June 19, we recommend moving out ideally by Friday the 17th or Saturday morning.

Uni t(r)ips: university attractions accessible to all

The university is not only classrooms and halls full of academics and students, but also many remarkable places that could easily be featured in tourist guides. The Communications Department presents them to both Olomouc residents and visiting tourists on Uni t(r)ips website, which has now been freshly updated and has also been given an English version. When your friends come to Olomouc, offer them our 23 attractions in addition to accommodation (in Czech) in the dorms. They'll find important historical buildings, captivating parks and gardens, breathtaking panoramas and fresh gastronomy. And what about you – have you been everywhere?

How do we get to the university?

One of the priority areas of sustainable development at UP is transport – especially one that is environmentally friendly or public space friendly. But how do we actually get to the university? How would we like to be transported? What prevents us from doing so? The Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Arts sought answers to this question by conducting a survey of transport habits and preferences in cooperation with the Sustainable University. It showed that cycling is popular in Olomouc, but it is hampered by a lack of safety and unconnected cycle paths; walking is limited by narrow and unpaved pavements, the low frequency of public transport connections and motorists are worried about the lack of parking spaces near university buildings. More detailed results are available in the UP Journal article (in Czech), research report (in Czech) and brief presentation (in Czech).

The Olomouc Region offers one – students with permanent residence in the region can apply for it. Applications are accepted until 24 June, details can be found on the region's website (in Czech).

Competition with Olomouc Majáles

If you've read this far, we have a reward for you. As Olomouc May Fest (Majáles) (in Czech) celebrates its 10th birthday this year, it continues to give away gifts – this time you can get a gift voucher for a language course at the Lingua Centrum language school. All you have to do is write to soutez@upol.cz by Monday 20 June and tell us who became the first king of "our" majáles in 2010. By the way, he will also make a brief appearance in this year's aftermovie.
