The Times Higher Education World University Ranking

The list, published since 2010 by the UK journal The Times Higher Education (THE), is one of the three most renowned global rankings of universities and higher education institutes. It judges universities in several areas, such as the quality of teaching, science and research, citations, international outlook, and co-operation with the corporate sector (industry income/knowledge transfer). The core factors in the overall evaluation are related to scientific performance, including teaching, research, and citations. One of the indicators was the Reputation Survey, conducted among global academics, who rate a university’s reputation for research excellence and teaching quality.

In THE World Universities Rankings 2022, Palacký University is ranked 801st to 1000th, which means it is tied for second place in the Czech Republic, together with Masaryk University in Brno. Of the domestic universities, only Charles University (501st-600th place) fares better.

In terms of ranking in selected areas, the University in Olomouc is the highest ranked in the International Environment category, at 473rd position. Compared to the previous ranking, it has improved its score, for example, in Research Productivity or Industry Income per academic staff member. The value of the indicator presenting the percentage of foreign students at Palacký University is also increasing year by year.

The UP still holds a good position among domestic universities in the area of citations, where despite a decline in the score (41.6) it continues to achieve the second best result after Charles University (52.0). Only the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice (41.4) is above the value of 40. In the field of research, we are ranked 3rd behind Charles University and Masaryk University.

THE New Europe Ranking 2018

For the first time, the rankings company published THE New Europe 2018 Ranking, which evaluated universities from the 13 countries which have joined the EU since 2004. The ranking was presented at the global THE Research Excellence: New Europe Summit, which was hosted by Palacký University Olomouc in April 2018. The best Czech placement was Charles University Prague at number 4, Masaryk University Brno at number 7, and Palacký University Olomouc at number 10. Topping the list is the University of Tartu in Estonia.

Another of THE rankings is Emerging Economies University Rankings, which deals with the assessment of universities from emerging-economy countries. Palacký University ranked 145th in the 2020 edition, improving by 10 places from the year before. In domestic comparison, it finished in the third place behind Charles University (66th) and Masaryk University (136th).
