Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)
The Shanghai Ranking
The ARWU ranking is the oldest international university ranking, first published in 2003. It was originally produced by Shanghai University and since 2009 it has been published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy company. It is focussed mainly on the academic and research levels of the universities, using a different methodology than THE World University Rankings and QS World University Rankings. For evaluating world universities, it takes into account six indicators, including the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science and the number of articles cited. In addition, it also takes into account the number of cited researchers in the Highly Cited Researchers database and the number of Nobel prize-winners affiliated with a given institution.
Palacký University was placed on the ARWU in 2017 for the first time, when in addition to its TOP 500 list of universities, ARWU also listed universities in the 500th to 800th positions. Palacký University placed between the 601st and 700th positions. Although in 2018 the ranking grew by another 200 places and now includes 1000 universities, the University of Olomouc managed to reach its best ranking in 2019 and 2020, namely 501st-600th place. Since the 2021 edition, the University of Olomouc has dropped to the 701st-800th position, having fallen in the score of the indicator of the number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics. It is in the same position in 2022.
In addition to the global rankings, university rankings in 54 subjects in the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences were published, and more than 1,800 universities from 96 countries were included in the final rankings. Palacký University was among the top five in seven fields (physics, chemistry, ecology, materials science and engineering, nanosciences and nanotechnology, agricultural sciences and public health) and was the only university from the Czech Republic succeeding in the field of materials science and engineering this year. It holds the shared position of the Czech number one in nanosciences and nanotechnology, agricultural sciences and public health.
