Charakteristika oboru

The major Jewish and Israeli studies endeavors to deeper integrate Jewish topics into the framework of the academic education and research. The narrower orientation of the major on the regional topics (Jews in Moravia) and Israeli studies is unique in the Czech Republic. It makes the center of Jewish Studies a regional research and educational center and at the same time a place stimulating the interest in Israel and Palestine that contributes to formation of neutral attitudes towards to the Near East topics. The graduate of this bachelor major can continue his or her studies in the masters (magister) program: Jewish Studies: Jewish history and culture.

The bachelor major Jewish and Israeli Studies is composed as interdisciplinary studies with module composition of subjects; both the content and organizational forms of the studies are planned the way that the studies are compatible with foreign universities and easily modifiable for distance form of studies. Therefore more emphasis is put on the instruction of foreign languages and their use in the instruction (modern Hebrew, biblical Hebrew, Yiddish, Arabic). The extensive problems of Jewish and Israeli studies are presented in wide interdisciplinary spectrum using knowledge and metodology of established humanistic major (history, philosophy, sociology and political studies, theology, filology and art history). Jewish and Near East topics are alive both from the historical-sociological perspective and topical political-social context and therefore this major is perspective not only in the Czech Republic but also on the European level.

Studies of the bachelor major Jewish and Israeli studies

Standard length of the studies is 3 years. The studies are completed by a bachelor exam.

The study programme is open to foreign students.

The studies have a module structure and a variety of compulsory and optional subjects. This enables the students to adjust the form of studies to their individual focus. All the students attend common basis that includes compulsory subjects and part of the common optional subjects in the framework of 3 modules (these are fundamental disciplines of the programme Jewish studies: languages, history and culture, philosophy and religion), bigger part is realized in specialized modules. The students can choose if they want to profile in the field of Jewish Moravian heritage, or in Israeli studies. Consequently they choose also the language specialization: if they choose the module Jews in Moravia, then they study besides the compulsory biblical Hebrew and modern Hebrew also Yiddish. If they choose the module Israeli studies they study besides the compulsory biblical and modern Hebrew also Arabic. Any credits from language courses acquired when studying abroad are included into the students´ results – according to the content focus into the relevant module.

Profil a uplatnění absolventa

General skills:

The graduate of the three-year bachelor studies acquires interdisciplinary general knowledge in the extensive field of Jewish studies. The student will be able to orientate himself/herself in basic Jewish literature, history and culture both in the Czech Republic and abroad. During the studies he or she acquires knowledge from all the basic disciplines of Jewish and Israeli studies, it means from individual eras of Jewish history and culture, from philosophy and religion, he or she will learn modern and biblical Hebrew and will have the opportunity to chose one of the narrower specialization Jews in Moravia/Israeli studies. According to the specialization he or she acquires knowledge of Yiddish or Arabic. The graduate will know basic metodological attitudes towards Jewish and Israeli studies, will be able to work with expert texts, interpret them and analyze them. During the studies great emphasis is given to professional traineeship and internships so that students can perfect their skills in a real work environment.

Special skills:

The graduate of the three-year bachelor studies

  • will make basic interdsciplinary knowledge in Jewish and Israeli studies, religious history and Jewish thought
  • will acquire metodological attitudes in the field
  • will learn modern Hebrew on a communication level (level bet-gimel), basic Yiddish/Arabic and biblical Hebrew
  • will be able to work independently in the framwork of his or her specialization – both oral (lectures, discussions, critical argumentation) or written forms (professional texts, articles, papers) etc.
  • will acquire general cultural and historical knowledge about Jewish history and culture in the Czech lands and abroad
  • will be ready to continue his or her studies in Jewish or Israeli studies on masters level both in Czech or foreign universities

Graduates' employability

The graduates can find work in the following fields:

  • graduates will be able to analyze cultural, political, religious and historical topics of Jewish and partly Near East studies, will be able to react on impulses of general public, cultural public and academic sphere and can contribute to a more professional and expert view of the Jewish culture and history and Near East topics
  • will be able to read and interpret both biblical and modern Hebrew texts, Yiddish/Arabic (including archival documents, old Hebrew texts and Jewish tombstones), graduates thus will be able to work in archives and libraries with Hebrew books, in museums with Hebrew and Yiddish artefacts
  • will be able to work in cultural-political sphere (publishing houses, cultural and cultural-political, cultural educational institutions), where they will differ from their competitors on the job market with their knowledge of languages and professional knowledge of Jewish and Israeli studies including Near East topics
  • if the graduates will use the opportunity to continue their studies on masters (or doctoral) level they will be able to be employed in scientific professions requiring complex view of the Jewish and Israeli topics, Jewish history and culture, will be able to analyze these topics on the highest professional level.

Požadavky přijímací zkoušky

Written entrance exam means that the applicants have to pss SPF test with the focus on cultural and humanistic and social disciplines.
