Charakteristika oboru

The single-subject programme consists of a self-contained type of university study and builds upon the bachelor's degree programme. The Master's degree systematically expands the student's use of the English language in all types of communication both in written and spoken form. It additionally focuses on developing a knowledge of the culture of English speaking countries. As with the double major Master's degree, it continues to develop a knowledge of the structure of the English language in comparison with Czech, enriched by a historical perspective. In the area of literature, students are introduced to issues of literary theory and criticism with a view to development tendencies. The studies both expand and specialise in terms of British and American literature from its beginnings up until the present. Students have the opportunity to focus on language, literature or translation within the framework of both the mandatory and optional courses. The level of specialisation is higher in light of it being a single-subject programme. Interactive methods of teaching are made use of during the studies and students are encouraged to work independently.

Annual fee per one academic year: EUR 1700.

Profil a uplatnění absolventa

Graduates from the programme have practical (receptive and productive) language knowledge and skills corresponding to the C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Single-subject graduates have a well-rounded and deep knowledge of the area in which they specialised. They are able to find work wherever a need for highly erudite philologists is needed (for example, in state or private cultural institutions, in the business sphere, in international relations and diplomacy, etc.). The single-subject master's degree is also a foundation for further education in a doctoral programme in English.

Požadavky přijímací zkoušky

An oral interview (UP): questions from the field of study which the applicant is applying for and a discussion regarding the previous and future specialised focus of the applicant. The discussion takes place on the basis of a written project for the future master's thesis (the tex of the bachelor's thesis can be used or another specialised work). The written project of a length of three pages should be presented by the applicant directly at the exam.

If the applicant is applying for a different subject than their bachelor's major, if the applicant is applying to FFUP from another faculty or university, they should bring their so-called diploma supplement for their bachelor's studies along with their project (the diploma supplement can be substituted by transcripts of their bachelor's study; the diploma supplement or transcripts must be officially verified by the study department of the revelant university).
