Why is Crime Fiction So Popular, Why Should We Care, and What are its Feminist Implications?
This presentation is part of a paper that we have been asked to write on the popular
appeal of crime fiction. In this particular presentation, we will present evidence -
anecdotal as well as more systematic - about the popularity of various forms of crime
fiction, including novels, television and film. We will include some clips from popular
television and film featuring female protagonists. We then present debates regarding the positive and negative impacts of crime fiction on its fans, particularly the implications of these debates for female audiences. Then, we would then like to elicit a discussion with our audience regarding their consumption of crime fiction, reasons they enjoy it, or reasons they dislike it. In the discussion, we will also offer prior "expert" generalizations about the reasons that crime fiction is so popular. In conclusion, we will offer a summary of the danger and potential of crime fiction popularity for women.
