First and second year students of the Medical Faculty of Palacký University in Olomouc will be the ones who will benefit most from the new Theoretical Institutes building. This modern building, costing 945 million CZK (€38mil), was constructed within 19 months. Although it is already lively with students, the opening ceremony is planned to be held in late November together with the adjacent BIOMEDREG Centre.

‘All the new students will become familiar with this building,’ said Assistant Dean Martin Modrianský. Lecture rooms shared by several departments were made available first. The new facility will be used by undergraduate students of General Medicine and Dentistry as well as students of certified postgraduate programmes such as Pathological Anatomy and Forensic Medicine, Medical Microbiology, Medical Immunology, Medical Biology, Histology and Embryology, as well as Nursing at the the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The laboratories cover more than 3,000 square metres and the lecture rooms cover more than 4,000 square metres, while the libraries cover 900 square metres. There are four large auditoriums and twelve specialised classrooms. The building has 6 floors aboveground with a total area of 16,354 square metres. It will house approximately two hundred researchers.

‘The old building will be still useful. We plan to move the Dean’s office into it and also establish a canteen for the medical students because the nearest one is located in the suburb of Neředín,’ remarked Modrianský.

This year, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of Palacký University accepted 305 students. Additionally, there will be 77 students who will study medicine in English.
