Majáles: Grandiose Festival of Palacký University Students

History, present and future will cover this year’s Majáles of Palacký University, which will take place on May 7–8. Celebrations of student life will offer numerous concerts, drama performances, exhibitions, sports activities and workshops. The festival will be open to the public.

American punkers, indie rock’n’roll, reggae, blues, alternative rock and more...

“We don’t want to organize the festival only for students, the programme will also be for families with children and the general public. We are taking advantage of the national holiday on May 8th so that Olomouc citizens can have fun together with the students,” said Ondřej Martínek, the main festival coordinator. Everyone can find something in the two-day programme. Audiences can look forward to a number of music attractions, for example. “Music will be on stages at the Armoury Courtyard (Zbrojnice), the Crown Fortress (Korunní pevnůstka) and the Outdoor Cinema (Letní kino), followed by after parties at Olomouc clubs. There will be up to 30 music groups covering almost every genre,” added Martínek.

Drama, film and programme for families with children

Lovers of theatre and film should not pass up the Outdoor Cinema (Letní kino) in Olomouc. A large circus tent will be constructed here by the Konvikt Theatre for drama and improvisation performances. Another important location for Majáles will be Biskupské náměstí and Wurmova Street, with stalls presenting students organizations, non-profit organizations and temporary shops of university students, selling hand-made products. If you want to learn something new, you are welcome to the workshops taking place in the W7 community centre at 7 Wurmova Street. At night there will be a film screening of Limonádový Joe, a Czech classic western comedy. Bezruč Park  will serve as a connecting line and a chill-out zone. “You can borrow a blanket and lie down on the grass to have a rest.  We want to offer this area for sports too,” outlined the coordinator.

King of May paradestarting on the main square

Tuesday’s programme will start off at 1 pm on the Upper Square. Král Majáles, Professor Josef Jařab, former rector, will be crowned The King of May at the Town Hall balcony.  The procession will then follow him to the Armoury (Zbrojnice) Courtyard. Admission to all festival activities (apart from club after parties) will be free!
